PRESENTATION
This route, which will take you back and forth, is 2100 metres long (4200 metres round trip) and is perfect for all year round. The most rewarding part of this walk is at the end, in the “Garganta del oso”.
The walk starts on the Candelaria-Navacarros road, having covered the 2.6 kilometres from the free car park which you find at the exit of the town of Candelario. The starting point is a good place to leave the car and start the hike along the forest path, which will take you to your destination.
In the first few metres of this walk, be sure to look towards the right, where you will see some incredible views of Candelario and the Béjar mountain range. Bit by bit, we will climb, following the path, until you enter an area named “Propios de Candelario”, which you will recognise due to its stone pillars, along with its ever-present young pines which come from reforestation and the broom shrubs, which are typical in this area.
Step by step, you will arrive at the bridge which crosses the Barquillo stream, a point which will tell you that you will soon arrive in the “Garganta del oso” area. From this point, you will follow the path for about 90 metres until you arrive at the first curve to the right, which you will not follow, where a signpost (dark green in colour) will indicate that you must enter the recently thinned Scots pine forest, where the path runs parallel to the river. From this point, you will begin to enjoy a landscape shaped by the whimsical shapes that water erosion, and the passing of time, have formed in the rocks, forming small rock pools.
We can also suggest alternative ways to do this route. You could start with Route 1 – La Canaleja (red) and then continue with this route, returning along the same path, you could follow the Candelario-Navacarros road until you reach Candelario again but entering the East side of the town.
