PRESENTATION
This route leaves the “Humilladero” square, going along the cobbled streets and passing the typical regaderas (streams which are throughout the town, the water is used to irrigate local orchards). When you reach the end of “Calle Enrique Fraile” (a street), at which point you will have travelled about 530 metres, on the side of a house called “Casa Chacinera” you will find the sign marking the start of the route.
From this point, you will begin the route, which is suitable all year round, along a street where you will see the small garden of an abandoned house, which stands out because of the impressive trees which grow there; a fir tree, a pine tree and a cedar tree, which draw attention. You will continue straight along the asphalt street, until, little by little, you leave Candelario, at which point you will walk along a well-kept dirt path, where you will enjoy breath-taking views of the Candelario mountain range and the town itself. We will take this opportunity to remind you to take a good camera to capture some great pictures, and to take sun cream because about 50% of this route has no vegetation to provide shade.
Continuing along the signposted road (grey signs), you will arrive at a road (beware of the smaller ones) after a small zigzag. This road which joins Candelario with “la Plataforma” is where you will walk towards the left until you see a sign that indicates you need to go into the pine wood of salmon coloured Scots pines, which will lead you to the end of the route (you will have to walk about 90 metres along the road).
Once you have entered the pine wood, you will discover this incredible area where you will be surrounded by extraordinarily conserved Scots pines. The first stop you will make will be at an altar with three crosses, where the blessing of the countryside is celebrated on the first Sunday in May.
You will then continue along the path through the pine wood until you arrive at the end of the route in the rest area of “La Cruz del Herrerito”, where you can enjoy views of both the Béjar and Candelario mountain ranges. Before starting the walk back, you can recharge your batteries and have lunch at a table outside or in the covered dining room at the rest area.
We can suggest another route to hike once you have completed this one, although you will have to retrace your steps back to the road and there, turn right, in the direction of Candelario, and without leaving the road, you will find the “5 Castaños” campsite, where you can start route 8 – La Mangá (light green).
